Apple AirPods had a quiet year in 2023, but this year, things may be heating up, according to analyst Jeff Pu (per MacRumors.)
Pu claims that Apple is planning on releasing cheaper AirPods later this year, which aligns with previous reporting by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a reliable Apple prognosticator.
SEE ALSO: Apple Maps may soon customize directions based on your car typeTo be more specific, Gurman said last month that Apple is working on a pair of fourth-generation AirPods models to be released in the second half of this year. One will be an entry-level model and the other will be a "mid-tier" variant. Expect better sound, a redesigned fit, and a USB-C charging case for both models. Gurman also suggested the mid-tier version would get active noice cancelation, something the base AirPods have badly needed for years.
Oh, and apparently we'll get a new AirPods Max model by the end of the year, too. However, Gurman has said that you should really only expect a USB-C port and new colors from that one. Let's cross our fingers for a lower price point, too.
Apple's earbuds line is in desperate need of a shakeup. Your current options include the $130 AirPods 2 that launched in 2019 and the $180 AirPods 3 from 2022, both of which could theoretically be replaced by the two new models. It would be great if Apple could find a way to make those lackluster older models obsolete while also dropping the prices a bit on the newer ones.
All of this is a great reminder that the $200 Beats Fit Pro might actually be the best wireless earbuds Apple makes.
